9 Best Digital Calipers – Mind-Blowingly Accurate Measurements!

Mind-blowingly accurate measurements? A must. A silky smooth slide action? Tick! Survives an accidental drop with barely a scratch and looks so good you can’t help but Instagram it next to your coffee mug and tech drawings?

Although we did get a little more technical during the test, that was our rough list of criteria when we set out to test a range of 150mm Digital Calipers in our Best Digital Caliper test 2021.

We put 9 of the Best Digital Calipers through their paces in the testing workshop of our Sheffield distribution centre. Before we dive into the results of our stringent tests, let’s take a quick look at the features you need to consider when choosing a digital caliper.

What to look for in a Digital Caliper

Range

For this test, we stuck to 150mm digital calipers as this is the most commonly used and available size. However, calipers with a measuring range of up to 2000mm are widely available, so consider future applications and what size caliper will be required for them.

Resolution

Is the smallest unit, or change in size the digital caliper will register. Most commonly, this is 0.01mm on current models, and sufficient for most applications. However, you’ll see one stand out on our list with a resolution of 0.001mm.

Accuracy

Details the margin of error the digital caliper will measure to, offering insurance that your measurements will be within the stated margin. This means the given measurement may be both above or below the actual length of the item being measured, this will be shown with a ± symbol, and will typically be around ±0.02mm.

Repeatability

This is the deviation you can expect when an object is measured more than once under the same conditions by the same person using the same measuring method.

IP Rating

The IP rating states the level of protection the instrument has against exposure to dust and liquid. An important feature in regards to the durability of the digital calipers and the environment they will be used in. Read more on the specifics of IP rating in our What are IP Ratings?

See article here…

Functions

Data output and the ability to measure incrementally are both important function considerations when looking for a suitable digital caliper. Ensure to think carefully about what you need from your caliper in terms of functions.

The Test

Using a set of calibrated gauge blocks, we tested the accuracy and repeatability (listed as accuracy) of each digital caliper, as well as considering the merits of the instruments durability, price point, functions, feel, and aesthetics. So, without further ado, let’s get into the results of our best digital caliper test !

9 Best Digital Calipers: 8. Moore & Wright MW110-15DFC Fractional Digital Caliper

Moore & Wright MW110-15DFC Fractional Digital Caliper

Overview

Moore and Wright are back at number 8, with this Fractional Digital Caliper. You can put it in your shopping basket for just £50.00, and if your choice of measuring unit is imperial, then the large display and ability to show fractions make it an attractive option. Scoring well in functions due to the uniqueness of the fractional display, the score here is only limited to 7.5 due to a lack of dedicated absolute mode. The large LCD boosts the aesthetics score, while also being practical for working in poorly lit conditions, or for users with limited eyesight. Similar to its sibling at no.9, the lower scores come in the durability and feel categories.

Features

  • Resolution: 0.01mm (0.0005″)
  • Accuracy: ±0.03mm (0.0015″)
  • Standard: Factory Standard

Our Take

Another great option from Moore & Wright for use on most applications carried out in dry conditions. The unique fractional capabilities will be appreciated by many. Although the durability of this model means they are unsuitable for heavy use, especially where water and/or dust resistance is needed. Still, a solid entry on the best digital caliper list!

6. Mitutoyo 500-196-30 ABSOLUTE AOS Digimatic Caliper

9 Best Digital Calipers: 6. Mitutoyo 500-196-30 ABSOLUTE AOS Digimatic Caliper

Mitutoyo 500-196-30 ABSOLUTE AOS Digimatic Caliper

Overview

It’s no surprise to see Mitutoyo enter our list of the best digital calipers. Their first entry offers solid scores across the board, with impressive accuracy scores in particular. A slightly lower score in the functions category is due to a lack of data output. If this is a function you require, Mitutoyo do offer this caliper with data output enabled (at a much higher price, of course!). Durability is let down by a lack of IP rating and a plastic digital unit. However the AOS system means the caliper will still take accurate measurements with water and dirt on the surface of the scale. The feel category is high due to a smooth action, however, in testing we did find it felt ‘a little plasticky’.

Features

  • Resolution: 0.01mm (0.0005″)
  • Accuracy: ±0.02mm (0.001″)
  • Repeatability: 0.01mm (0.0005″)
  • Depth Bar: Square
  • Thumb Roller
  • Origin (ABS-Zero): Yes
  • Inch/Metric

Our Take

A little pricey for an entry level caliper at £118.00. However, the accuracy is solid and the AOS system is impressive. While the insurance of quality from the Mitutoyo name ensure it’s place on our list, and its status as a recommended purchase.

9 Best Digital Calipers: 5. Mitutoyo 500-752-20 Absolute Digimatic IP67 Caliper

Mitutoyo 500-752-20 Absolute Digimatic IP67 Caliper

Overview

Mitutoyo’s IP67 rated offering makes the top 5 with it’s clean design and stylish looks. Impressive accuracy and durability boost it’s score further, while it feels solid and smooth in use. Although its functions score is low due to a lack of data output, it would be remiss of us not to mention it’s data outputting sibling, the 500-762-20 ( A hefty price tag of £210 means it fell short of being considered for our top 9).

Features

  • Range: 0-150mm (0-6″)
  • Resolution: 0.01mm (0.0005″)
  • Accuracy: ±0.02mm (0.001″)

TESA 00530140 TESA-Cal IP67 Digital Caliper

Overview

The highly acclaimed Swiss company TESA swaggers into the number four slot. An ‘oh, so-smooth’ slide operation secures a lofty eight out of ten in the feel category, while it’s IP67 rating and solid construction see it match the mark for durability. A lack of data output stops it receiving a super-high function score, and it could be a little prettier, but we’re struggling to mark it down for anything else – a serious contender that won’t set you back too much!

Features

  • Resolution: 0.01mm (0.0005″)
  • Accuracy: ±0.03mm (0.001″)
  • IP67 Protection
  • Protected from water, coolant, oil & dust
  • Square depth rod
  • mm-inch conversion
  • Zero setting at any point

Our Take

A reasonable price tag of £88.00 for a ‘big name’ digital caliper combined with its IP67 rating positions the 00530140 from Tesa as a great option for many uses. Unless you specifically need output and/or bluetooth capabilities this one should be on your shortlist!

Sylvac 30-810-9506 S_Cal EVO Micron IP67 Digital Caliper

Overview

The unbelievable ability of this digital caliper to measure in microns (yes, that’s a resolution of 0.001mm!), sees the highest accuracy score on the list. The price, a whopping £328.00 damages it’s overall score in our eyes, but as it’s almost faultless across the other categories, and value for money is a personal thing, if you’re got the cash to splash, you really can’t go wrong!

Features

  • Resolution: 0.001mm (0.00005″)
  • Accuracy: ±0.004mm (0.00005″)
  • Standard: Din 862

An unbelievable piece of kit, the fact it’s not sitting pretty at the top of the list is testament to what’s to come. However, the accuracy of this digital caliper is amazing, and with rubber gripping and IP67 protection it’s durability makes it suitable for use in most conditions. It’s bluetooth data output facility is easy to use, works well and can be used with Sylvacs free data collection software!

2.TESA 00530319 Twin-Cal IP67 Digital Caliper

9 Best Digital Calipers: 2.TESA 00530319 Twin-Cal IP67 Digital Caliper

TESA 00530319 Twin-Cal IP67 Digital Caliper

Overview

TESA wrestle back into the number two slot with their Twin-Cal IP67 Digital Caliper. With four 9/10 marks we’re still scratching our heads as to how it hasn’t won! A thing of beauty, it is also solidly made, a metal casing is enhanced by a rubber grip while it’s unbelievably smooth slide is matched by the comfortable feel of it’s buttons. A lack of built in Bluetooth and no pre-set options seems bizarre on such a modern high-end instrument, it also hurts its functions score in our test and stops it claiming the top spot.

Features

  • Resolution: 0.01mm (0.0005″)
  • Accuracy: ±0.03mm (0.001″)
  • Wireless data output
  • mm/inch conversion

  • Internal & external jaws
  • Depth measuring blade

Our Take

Erm, what are you waiting for? Buy it…!

Buy the Sylvac 30-810-1506/50 50 Years S_Cal EVO Bluetooth IP67 Digital Caliper

Conclusion

In conclusion, the best caliper for you will depend on the requirements of your application and of course, personal preference. TESA and Sylvac, both Swiss manufacturers, offer some of the highest quality equipment out there, but it often comes with a hefty price tag!

Mitutoyo is always a great choice when buying metrology equipment, their calipers scored well, but were just beaten on functionality and durability. It’s amazing what a bit of rubber on the digital unit can do when you’re kicking calipers around the lab!

Moore & Wright and our own DML calipers offer quality at an affordable price! If you don’t require the functionality or protection levels found on the higher end calipers, these are great choices!
